Kara & Cole's Dodgeville, Wisconsin Wedding
Some weddings stay with you long after the day is over.
Kara and Cole's wedding at White Oak Savanna was one of those weddings for me. In fact, it was the wedding that made me realize I wanted to pursue wedding filmmaking full-time.
I had known Kara for years through Wisconsin athletics. While she played basketball and I played volleyball, our paths crossed through the close-knit community of collegiate sports in Wisconsin. Getting to reconnect years later and spend a wedding weekend getting to know Kara, Cole, and their families more deeply was an incredible gift.
High school sweethearts who grew up together in Dodgeville, they've spent years building a life rooted in friendship, family, and community. By the end of the weekend, it was easy to see why so many people were excited to celebrate them, To know Kara and Cole is to love them.
Starting the Day Slowly
One of my favorite moments from Kara and Cole's wedding happened before anyone had put on a dress or pinned a boutonnière.
The morning began at Cathryn's Market on Dodgeville's Main Street, a charming coffee shop housed in a historic building that once served as a pharmacy and holds special family history for Kara's family. Rather than spending the morning tucked away from guests, Kara and Cole chose to start their wedding day together.
Friends and family who had traveled into town gathered for coffee, breakfast, and conversation before the celebration officially began. People drifted between tables catching up, sharing stories, and soaking in the excitement of the day ahead.
Kara and Cole arrived together, moving easily through the room and spending time with the people who had come from near and far to celebrate them.
I absolutely loved this choice.
It was simple, unhurried, and completely reflective of who they are. Before timelines, portraits, and ceremony details took over the day, they created space to simply enjoy the people they loved most.
Looking back, it felt like the perfect start to a wedding centered on connection, community, and making the most of every moment together.
White Oak Savanna: A Hidden Gem in Wisconsin's Driftless Region
Located just outside Dodgeville and less than an hour from Madison, White Oak Savanna sits among the rolling hills of Wisconsin's Driftless Region. The property offers a peaceful countryside setting where restored prairie, farmland, and sweeping views stretch in every direction.
At the heart of the venue is the beautifully restored barn, where historic character meets thoughtful modern updates. The property strikes a perfect balance between rustic charm and elegance.
Classic red barns sit among rolling green hills. Oak trees provide shade throughout the property. And no matter where you turn, there seems to be another beautiful backdrop waiting to be explored.
Getting Ready at White Oak Savanna
One thing I always appreciate is when a venue gives both sides of the wedding party space to truly enjoy the morning. White Oak Savanna offers dedicated getting-ready spaces for both the bride and groom, allowing everyone to relax and settle into the day.
While the bridal party spent the morning getting ready on-site, the groomsmen kicked off the day with a trip to a nearby hotel waterpark. It was exactly the kind of laid-back, fun-loving energy that felt perfectly on brand for this group of friends.
By the time everyone arrived back at the venue, there was excitement in the air and anticipation building for the day ahead.
A Ceremony Beneath the Oak Tree
The outdoor ceremony site sits beneath a large oak tree overlooking the surrounding landscape.
Just beyond the ceremony space were fields of cabbages, sunflowers, and rolling Wisconsin hills stretching into the distance. The view felt almost impossibly picturesque—a reminder of how beautiful this corner of Wisconsin can be.
As guests gathered beneath the tree, there was a sense that everyone present had known Kara and Cole's story for years. For many of the friends and family in attendance, it felt like Kara and Cole had already been part of each other's lives forever—it only seemed right that they were finally having this celebration together.
One of my favorite moments was watching their young nephew make his way down the aisle as ring bearer. The smiles, laughter, and reactions from guests perfectly captured the warmth that surrounded the entire day.
You could feel how loved these two were.
The ceremony wasn't filled with elaborate production or grand gestures. Instead, it felt grounded in what mattered most: two people surrounded by the family and friends who had watched their story unfold over the years.
Portraits Around White Oak Savanna
One of the things I appreciated most about White Oak Savanna was the variety the property offered for portraits throughout the day. Like many summer weddings in Wisconsin, we were working with bright sunshine, which can sometimes make finding flattering locations a bit more challenging. Thankfully, the venue provides enough variety that we were able to move between different structures, trees, and shaded areas while still keeping the character of the property front and center.
Some of my favorite moments came later in the evening as we explored the dirt roads winding through the surrounding hills. With the sun beginning to soften and the countryside stretching out around us, it felt quintessentially Wisconsin.
Between the rolling landscape, historic barns, and open skies, the property offered a beautiful backdrop that felt natural and true to the setting rather than overly curated.
A Reception Filled With Heart
The barn provided the perfect setting for the reception.
Unlike many modern barn venues that blend industrial finishes with rustic elements, White Oak Savanna fully embraces its agricultural roots. Step inside and you're surrounded by warm wood in every direction—from the walls and ceiling to the structure itself. The result is a space that feels genuinely rustic, cozy, and inviting without sacrificing its sense of scale.
As the sun began to set over the surrounding hills, guests gathered inside to celebrate a couple they clearly adored. Throughout the evening, one thing became abundantly clear: Kara and Cole are surrounded by people who absolutely love them.
The speeches were heartfelt. The dance floor stayed packed. Every interaction felt genuine.
It was the kind of wedding where you couldn't help but smile watching the people around them celebrate.
Preserving the Voices You'll Never Want to Forget
A few months before Kara and Cole's wedding, I had an idea.
I had recently discovered After The Tone, an audio guestbook that allows guests to leave voicemail messages throughout the wedding day using a vintage rotary phone. As someone who believes wedding films should preserve not only how a day looked, but how it felt, I immediately saw the potential.
When I brought the idea to Kara and Cole, they were instantly on board.
Throughout the day and into the evening, guests picked up the phone and left messages filled with marriage advice, inside jokes, heartfelt memories, laughter, and plenty of late-night dance floor energy. By the end of the night, we had collected something incredibly special: a living time capsule of the people who love them most.
One of my favorite moments came when Kara and Cole each left messages for their future selves—and for each other. Knowing they'll be able to listen back years from now and hear exactly where they were in that moment of life felt incredibly meaningful.
As a filmmaker, these recordings are priceless.
Being able to weave the voices of loved ones directly into a wedding film adds a layer of emotion that simply can't be recreated years later. Long after the flowers have faded and the dance floor has emptied, those voices remain.
Years from now, Kara and Cole won't just remember what their wedding looked like.
They'll remember what it sounded like.
