Layton & Kathryn's Creative Northwoods Celebration
Some weddings feel like a beautifully planned event.
Layton and Kathryn's wedding felt like stepping into a world entirely their own.
Held at Hunt Hill Nature Center in Sarona, Wisconsin, their celebration blended creativity, community, music, and a little bit of summer camp magic into a weekend that guests won't soon forget. Nestled among forests and lakes in Wisconsin's Northwoods, Hunt Hill offers a setting that feels worlds away from everyday life—a place where people gather around campfires, stay in cabins, and spend entire weekends together rather than simply attending a wedding.
For Layton and Kathryn, it was the perfect fit.
A Love Story Built on Creativity
Layton and Kathryn first met while studying animation, a shared passion that would eventually lead them both to careers at Pixar.
From the moment you meet them, it's obvious they are incredibly creative people. The kind of people who don't simply attend life—they build it, shape it, and bring their own perspective to everything they touch.
That creativity showed up throughout every corner of their wedding day.
Layton, who is rarely seen without a cowboy hat, naturally incorporated his signature style into the celebration. Kathryn brought her own personality through playful details, including a pair of Converse sneakers and a vibrant color palette filled with pinks, oranges, and disco-inspired touches.
Rather than choosing one aesthetic over the other, they found a way to blend both worlds together. The result felt uniquely them: part Northwoods cowboy, part colorful creative dream, and completely authentic.
A Wedding Weekend at Summer Camp
One of the things that makes Hunt Hill Nature Center so special is that it feels less like a traditional wedding venue and more like a summer camp for adults.
Guests had the option to stay on-site in camp-style accommodations, creating a wedding weekend experience rather than a single-day event. Friends traveled from across the country to celebrate, filling the property with the kind of energy that only comes from gathering people who don't often get to be in the same place at the same time.
As guests explored the grounds, gathered around campfires, and shared drinks from coolers scattered throughout the property, the entire weekend felt relaxed and welcoming.
There was no rush. No pressure. Just people enjoying time together in a beautiful place.
Private Vows in the Forest
Before the ceremony, Layton and Kathryn slipped away for a private moment together on one of the wooded trails that winds through the property.
Surrounded by towering trees and the quiet sounds of the forest, they exchanged personal vows away from the crowd.
As a filmmaker, these moments are often some of my favorites to capture.
The wedding day moves quickly, but those few quiet minutes allow couples to slow down, breathe, and focus entirely on each other before the celebration begins.
For Layton and Kathryn, it was a beautiful way to start the day.
An Amphitheater Ceremony Filled with Emotion
The ceremony took place in Hunt Hill's outdoor amphitheater, one of the venue's most unique features.
Guests sat on hay bales draped in fabric beneath the open sky while the surrounding forest created a natural backdrop for the ceremony.
What stood out most wasn't the setting itself, though—it was the people.
Rather than limiting speeches and tributes to the reception, members of the wedding party each shared personal words during the ceremony. Story after story reflected on friendship, love, and the journey that had brought Layton and Kathryn together.
By the end, there were plenty of tears, even more hugs, and a feeling that everyone present had played some role in helping shape the couple's story.
It felt less like watching a ceremony and more like witnessing a community celebrate two of its own.
A Reception Unlike Any Other
If the ceremony reflected the couple's hearts, the reception reflected their personalities.
The evening began with one of the most memorable first dances I've ever witnessed.
Rather than pressing play on a recording, a band made up of friends and family performed the music live. Guitarists, singers, and saxophone players came together to create a performance that felt deeply personal and completely unforgettable.
And that was only the beginning. As the evening continued, a live band took over and kept the dance floor packed.
Then came the surprise. A few songs into the night, Layton grabbed the microphone and launched into I Believe in a Thing Called Love by The Darkness. The crowd lost it.
What made the moment even better was learning that he had been secretly practicing for months leading up to the wedding. It wasn't a spontaneous decision—it was a gift to Kathryn and everyone gathered there.
And he absolutely crushed it. The room erupted with cheers, laughter, and singing as guests joined in. It was one of those moments that perfectly captured the spirit of the day: joyful, unexpected, and completely authentic.
